At IAA Mobility 2023, Polestar unveils Polestar Synergy, an electric supercar that combines three winning car designs from over 600 entries. The electric supercar comes to life as a 1:1 scale model after having won the annual Polestar Design Contest. Together with Polestar’s design team, two exterior designers and one interior designer championed the concept of Polestar Synergy, and during the mobility event in Munich, attendees witnessed the real-life model of the electric supercar.

a polestar synergy of designers

In collaboration with Polestar’s design team, designers Devashish Deshmukh and Swapnil Desai worked on the exterior of Polestar Synergy. Deshmukh drew inspiration from a hammerhead shark and hollowed out the volumes of the electric supercar. Desai stepped in and refined the visual elements to ensure durability and the ability for technical upgrades over time. Entering the vehicle, interior designer Yingxiang Li created a cabin with a seating position that offers the driver a ‘floating’ sense of comfort, control, and a driving experience based on performance.

The final collaborative design of Polestar Synergy features a single-seat floating interior design with control at its core. The steering wheel reinvents those found in the gaming world, forming crescent-shaped handles joined by a display that projects the vehicle’s cruising speed. An extended display lies immediately in front of the wheel, exuding minimalism with its yellow-on-black background and essential design elements.

Polestar Synergy boasts proportions and details that have not been seen from the car brand before, measuring 1.07 meters tall and 4.56 meters long. This testifies to Polestar’s belief that electric supercars can be just as exciting as internal combustion supercars. Maximillian Missoni, Polestar’s Head of Design, comments about the collaborative process of Synergy: ‘this year, the story is as much about collaboration as performance. I’m proud that the team was able to guide and support the winners to realizing their dream as a full-scale model.’

Polestar and Hot Wheels may create collectible toy cars

Alongside the electric supercar, Polestar announces its next inspiration for the design contest during the IAA Mobility 2023: Mattel’s Hot Wheels brand. ‘The collaboration with Mattel for next year’s Polestar Design Contest and the forthcoming scale models of our production cars will bring the Polestar brand and this groundbreaking competition to an even wider audience. All of this proves that electric vehicles – in reality or as toys – can be just as, if not more, exciting than their ICE equivalents,’ says Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath.

The next Polestar Design Contest may draw references from the 55 years of history of Hot Wheels and invite its participants to reimagine the toy cars as real-life models. In return, Hot Wheels and Matchbox may produce collectibles of the winning entries in the future, turning the designs into sought-after additions to toy collectors’ troves. ‘This collaboration celebrates the essence of Hot Wheels: hard-fought determination, grit, and passion that push the boundaries of auto design. We can’t wait to see the concepts for next year’s Challenge,’ says Roberto Stanichi, SVP and Global Head of Vehicles at Mattel.

Now that the 1:1 scale model has debuted in Munich, the Polestar Synergy travels to the US where it will start its tour as a highlight model at the Hot Wheels Legends Tour in El Segundo, California, on October 7th, 2023. After the event, the electric supercar makes additional appearances at the car brand’s sites across the nation. In keeping with tradition, Kamil Kozik from Poland received a high commendation for his performance go-kart that prioritizes sustainability, has a simple design, and can be integrated into a local power system when not in use.
