‘Kjerringholmen’ cabin by Line Solgaard Arkitekter

Line Solgaard Arkitekter has recently completed ‘Kjerringholmen’ as a small holiday home in the Hvaler archipelago of Norway. The 63 sqm cabin stands on steel pillars amid a rocky landscape, specifically on a private island bought by the client, framing expansive views of the water ahead. With its snug wooden shell blending almost seamlessly into its context, ‘Kjerringholmen’ is proof ‘that large houses don’t necessarily mean more quality of life. In just 63 square meters, with smart planning, it still has plenty of usable space,’ shares the practice.

Moreover, thanks to its multifaceted design, the cabin takes on varying shapes and profiles when viewed from different angles. Such a simple architectural approach effortlessly expands a tiny home’s sense of space and transforms remote living into a dynamic experience.

a snug retreat that appeals to the senses

The team at Line Solgaard Arkitekter erected ‘Kjerringholmen’ on steel pillars to minimize disturbance on the natural landscape, which now serves as an extension of the indoor space, a charming outdoor area to gather and relax. ‘This approach of ‘build smaller, build smart’, treating nature with respect, keeping the ecological footprint as small as possible is a natural Norwegian mindset, as we like to spend time in nature and the outdoor, to roam,’ write the architects.

Building near water means developing a responsible understanding of the environment. The reward is an individual spectacle of nature at different times of the year. The house appeal to all the senses. And it is the attention to detail that makes them special. The philosophy of working with nature instead of against it. It is a small, detailed, cozy, and efficient wooden cabin, intended to work together with the outside through an emphasis on the connection between exterior and interior, views and bay windows.’
