Zav Architects follows Sustainable Circular Design Approaches

Typeless Building or Center For Handy Skills, designed by Zav Architects, stands as a two-story platform for educational initiatives on Hormuz Island in the Persian Gulf, South of Iran. The structure embraces a sustainable approach, drawing from Iran’s historical use of on-hand or discarded materials for valuable creations, such as carpets. In response to the shift towards oil-dependent consumerism and resource-intensive construction, Typeless Building project advocates for a return to a circular economy, favoring recycling and zero-waste value creation. The prototype experiments with locally abundant materials like cement blocks, treated as a new local resource. The building’s construction involves a combination of low-tech and primed materials, emphasizing adaptability to future needs without major demolitions.

concrete structure upholds scaffolding frame and canopy roof

Architecturally, Center For Handy Skills liberates spaces from traditional constraints, utilizing a concrete structure for flexible spatial units, a scaffolding structure for adjustable circulation, and a canopy roof for weather protection without the need for insulation. The incorporation of adjustable electrical and mechanical elements, along with strategically designed utility channels, provides versatility in adapting to different spatial configurations. Large corridors enhance ventilation and contribute to temperature reduction in the island’s harsh climate. The physical appearance resulting from this process becomes an integral part of the architectural aesthetic, embracing an unsolicited appearance that welcomes future changes. The design team at Zav Architects seeks to establish a welcomed practice in the architectural discipline, aligning with the principles of sustainability and adaptability.
